The Montmartre Cemetery, located on the side of the Butte of the “mount of martyrs” was opened in 1825. The artsy cemetery blends beautifully into the somewhat Bohemian environment of Montmartre. The park like cemetery is the final resting place of some of the most famous figures in French history: Edgar Degas, Jacques Offenbach, Hector Berlioz, Heinrich Heine, Nijinsky, Stendhal, Adolphe Sax, Francois Truffaut and Emile Zola’s family. Also some of the most striking sculptures in Paris can be found in Montmartre Cemetery. A stroll through this cemetery is like a stroll through the cultural history of France.
