Mystery Novels, A Popular Genre

Mystery novels have always been and still remain among the most popular fictional books. A mystery story requires a crime of some sort usually a murder and an individual who works to bring the perpetrator to justice. Mystery includes categories such as thrillers, cozies usually with an amateur sleuth, romantic suspense, police procedurals and hard-boiled often action packed and violent. The modern mystery is frequently a combination of these categories. The modern mystery era began in 1841 with the father of the genre, Edgar Allan Poe. In recent years the mystery novel has increased in popularity. Mysteries are the  biggest selling genre second only to romance novels.
