Khayelitsha Township Children

When a tourist strolls through the dusty streets of Khayelitsha a wonderful thing happens. Children will smile and wave at you. If you smile back, they will often join in your stroll. Grabbing your hand, they will point out interesting sites to you. An important thing you must remember is this. The people of Khayelitsha respectfully request that you not give money, candy or other treats to their children. Their rationale: “Don’t make beggars of our children.” Enjoy the children, but respect their parents’ request.

  1. Having visited cultures where children are not only expected to beg, but are forced to by their parents, this story is refreshing.
