Xhosa Music

The Xhosa tribe has always used music for various ritual occasions. The uniqueness of  the tongue-clicking sound is beautiful. A well-known Xhosa song is a wedding song called “Qongqongthwane.” It was performed by South African born Miriam Makeba (shown below in the photo by Cesare Abbate/European Pressphoto Agency). She was affectionately called “Mama Africa” because her music encouraged millions of South Africans to work toward freedom from apartheid. Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, part of the South African National anthem , is a Xhosa hymn written by Enoch Sontonga in 1897.
